Inkredia—Luwan of Brida, a novel by Sarang Mahajan, is published by Gloryburg Publising LLP. The subtitle—Danger looms tall. Mystery runs deep; is intriguing as well as gripping. The cover is in fiery shades with a symbol at the centre and fire around it. With such an interesting cover, I was sure it would not disappoint me.
Sarang Mahajan is a novelist and a screen-writer. An avid fan of fantasy and science fiction, most of his work belongs to these genres. About the book: In Fal Doram, also called as the great empire of Inkredia, a conspiracy begins to unfold. The first step is an easy one—kill a simple, villager named Luwan. When Luwan suddenly faces an enemy straight out of the folklore, he is left dumbfounded by the mystery why they are after him. As he makes a daring run to survive, journeying through the unknown world outside his village, new mysteries emerge, some closely concerning him. Riddled with questions and hunted by legendary assassins, and by the nonhumans made of the darkest element in the nature, Luwan makes a dangerous journey through the incredible empire of Inkredia.
The fantasy genre has always been a delight for me to read. After LOTR and Harry Potter, I was on a lookout for something good to read. When I received this book for review, I was excited.
As I opened the book; in the inner cover I saw the map of Inkredia—truly a delight. Visual readers can easily connect with the plot while looking at the map. So it’s a USP for them. Brida, a village is marked too on the map and you can go on checking the map as you go on ahead in the story to make the co-relation.
“From beyond the horizon,
Come the claws of dusk;
Followed by the creature,
Creeping and crawling
All that is seen,
It throws into a shadow
In Inkredia…
Night is falling”
And this is how it all began.
This is the first book of the four-part series and the plot is set in a fictional world of Inkredia—a land where humans and nonhumans coexist in harmony without ever facing each other, unless they truly MUST!
Luwan is a seventeen-year-old simpleton boy living at a hillside village (as seen on the map) Brida, and part 1 centres around him. Or we can put it as, he is the protagonist. The villagers of Brida are constantly threatened and troubled by guards of Lord Gruwak, who is in-charge of the passage through the Malango Mountains. Tired of the constant exploitation, Luwan refused to pay taxes to one of Gruwak’s tax collectors. Gruwak is angry and subsequently orders him to be captured. Finding himself in grave danger, Luwan has to choose between staying and leaving. He understood that the village that kept him safe all these years can't protect him anymore. He finally decides to take the dangerous choice of fleeing to the world outside with his sister Meg.
He was well aware of the consequences of his choice. He knew he might die in the journey itself but he still took the risk. However, unfortunately, a new and far more powerful enemy is awaiting him. Luwan is unaware of the fact that why this new enemy is after him and yet he keeps running as that’s his only hope to be safe. And, as he travels far and wide, he learns about fascinating places in Inkredia, about powerful relics and artifacts and... also becomes aware of the dark side of Inkredia.
The lucidity of the story is commendable. The description of Inkredia and Brida are very artistically done. The characters are well placed. One can actually visualise the text coming alive as they go on reading the book; that’s the beauty of the narration and vivid descriptions. The language is kept simple and easy to comprehend for the readers.
Who is Luwan, why Gruwak torments the villagers of Brida, did Luwan make the right choice of fleeing or he landed in more trouble, why are the dark forces after him, who is IImor, how Luwan faces IImor, how incredible nonhumans are born as Luwan faces IImor, will Luwan be able to protect his sister Meg, will his journey give answers to the unanswered questions, will Luwan find answers to all the mysteries that are lurking in the lands of Inkredia are some of the many reasons why you will keep turning the pages to find out what happens in Inkredia—Luwan of Brida.
This 388-page book is a light read, gripping and tempting. Once you complete the book, you would be eager to pick up the next book in the series. I wish Sarang Mahajan all the best for his future endeavors.
