From the pen of a shy girl...

Recently, I became an editorial mentor for www.urbookmyreview.com

I have four interns under me. I decided to give them their first task which would help them look within. So, I told them to write about their writing journey, how they started writing, how writing helped them deal with their life.

I was totally amazed to see how they handled the task so well. They honestly penned down their stories. I gave them individual feedback too. But there's this one assignment that I loved the most, so with due permission from my intern Padmaja Phatak. I am sharing it with you all.

Relationships: Wows, Vows and Woes!

Relationships are strength. Relationships are weakness. But whatever they may be, they are essentially indispensable. These days it is all the more necessary to keep nurturing these relationships every now and then. Be it a boyfriend-girlfriend relation or a husband-wife relation, fights, arguments, and whatnot are integral part of the bond.

It is also a typical notion that the guys in relationships are forgetful; they don’t remember dates and special occasions. But then the lady heart wants to be pampered on such occasions for she cares, understands and loves.

1ka3 Bundle of Joy - Website Review

Hi lovelies,

So today, I am gonna tell you about this awesome website that I recently came across. This works on the philosophy of ‘the more you buy, the less you pay’.

Yes, you heard it right. First, let me tell you how this site works. You can select any product from the wide range of quality stuff that is listed on the site. Once you choose your product, you can fill in your shipping details, choose whether to pay online or opt for COD and simply relax.

The site’s delivery is pretty fast. They deliver in 3-4 days of the order receipt. Also, the packaging is such that the products that reach you are not damaged in the process. Once you receive your parcel, open it with bated breaths because you are in for a surprise. Of course, a good one!

In your parcel, you will find the product that you ordered, packed very neatly. Along with that, there will be two freebies. Voila! And these two bonus products wouldn’t be trash, they will be useful and equally worth it. Your primary product (the one you ordered) can be a little expensive in comparison to the two freebies that you got but see you bought just one and got three! Isn’t it a delight?

So eventually the product that you bought wouldn’t feel so costly. This is therefore a cost-effective way of shopping as well. So what are you waiting for? Grab on the opportunity and #Karo1ka3

That man of my dreams!

It would be a complete lie if I would say that no one ever loved me the way you do. It would be a lie if I would say I was always wrong when it came to choices. Nothing in the world is ever completely wrong, my dear, even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Then how can I always be wrong? How can the emotions be wrong? But then, emotions are like wild horses. They can be dangerous if left untamed.

But now that you are so crazily in love with me and you have even confessed, wrong things are going to turn right too. That's my belief. At least for now! You are everything that I always wished for. Well, I wouldn't say that because my prince charming; that man of my dreams slightly differs from you. Being in love with him is like kissing a melted chocolate and then surrender completely to the pleasures that it offers. Being in love with you is no different. However, the man of my dreams would not probably bear half the things that you have for me and that's why you are better. Maybe the best! I am yet to know...

May be someday you will actually end up being my prince charming and take me for your princess. Maybe we shall also ride the white horse together and elope to a distant land. I can read God's signals as He smiles at me and showers his blessings in the form of rain from the skies above. He is one with me in this desire.

It's raining now, the weather has turned pleasant. It's the perfect ambiance. Something that I adore. Imagine holding hands under the natural showers, walking on an empty street in such a romantic weather, looking deep in each other's eyes, feeling the presence, listening to the fast paced heart beats, that magical touch, that twinkle in the eyes, those shivering fingers, the numb hands, the blowing hair - being with your love in this weather is priceless. And there's more; the touch of your lips on mine under the rain will be so majestic. It will send shivers down my spine. I can only imagine! If only you could read my mind and somehow the distance between us could be reduced.
I can be strong and survive this though. But somehow, the emotions always make me weak. And its one of that day, when am sitting admiring the magical weather and you are busy sitting in your office. *Sigh*

Wish you could be here after all and create the magic that only comes with you!

P.S. I love you!

You step out in the streets, and your eyes instantly meet a feast of colors! The markets are full of irresistible clothes and jewellery… Yes, the ethnic jewellery! It’s like a revisit to the traditional India that we all hear about or read in textbooks. It will leave you mesmerized and let you breathe… Unlike big cities, where life is lived in a haste, Jaipur provides you a calm aura. It like to move at ease. Nobody is in a hurry, Jaipurwalas believe that life should be enjoyed and they make sure that it is reflected throughout the city. The cuisine, the clothes, the way they speak, all of it has a grace and charm of its own that will surely leave a lasting impression on you. The apnapan of Jaipur is hard to ignore and that is why, today I take you through the lanes of this beautiful city. Here are 10 things that you just can’t miss to indulge in while on a trip to Jaipur.

1. Treat yourself to some Delicacies: Jaipur maybe known for a lot of things but the food stands out among all its specialties. It’s a paradise for food lovers. This time when you visit Jaipur, take out time to explore some of the popular joints here - Nand Gol Gappe Wala, located in Raja Park, offers hands down the best economical and hygienic gol gappes in the city. Julie Furniture Bhel Puri Wala will leave you claiming that you have had the best bhel puri ever! Sampat’s kachori is yet another thing to look out for… Banna Ji Coffee Shop, located aside Mr. Beans at 22 Godam, is definitely a great coffee shop and a nice hangout spot with just the best ambiance. Jaipur aaye aur paan na khaaye!! Don’t even think of missing this out… you dare not call yourself a fan of paan if you haven't heard the name of Anu Mobile Paan Bhandar. Initially run in a Maruti Van, with time and efforts this joint earned a big name for itself, big enough to supply Jaipuriya paan for Saifeena’s wedding. Winters and ice creams… sounds like crazy! Saras Parlour offers the best ice cream for you to gorge on… And the list goes on and on… C’mon… Get, set, and eat…

    2.   Click-o-Mania: Photography lovers get your shutters ready… and click, click, click. The best thing to do in Jaipur is to wake up early in the morning and go on a photo-walk… The view from Nahargarh Fort at 6 in the morning is breath-taking and you can’t afford to let it go. You can rope in some of your friends and experience the calmness of the city. The Jaipurwalas are never in a rush, so the city stays peaceful till late morning hours…. In a nutshell, the ideal time to explore the city is 6-10 in the morning. An evening can be well spent at Birla Mandir.

     3.  The Royal Appeal: The list goes bigger and better here… Jaipur is the Royal City full of majestic Palaces and Forts that sing of its timeless glory. Amber Fort, City Palace, Jaigarh Fort, Rambagh Palace, Sheesh Mahal, Hawa Mahal, Jal Mahal, Samodh Palace, Nahargarh Fort, Jantar Mantar observatory… and so on. The city has been an eyewitness to the days of galore, when legends and sagas were sung in traditional folk songs for the beautiful queens and princesses. Jaipur is a mysterious land of snake charmers, enigmatic royal safaris, vivid colors and festivities!

     4.   Cultural Treat: Jaipur epitomizes the adventurous spirit of Rajputana. In spite of growing into a busy metropolis, it has managed to retain its character and rich cultural heritage. It has carried forth with it the traditions of yesteryear… Jaipur thus is a beautiful fusion of age old values and modernity. The music and dance reflects the culture of the city most aptly. Rajasthani music is so appealing to the senses that the listener can’t stop his/her feet from swaying to the beats. The iktara is used to play soothing tunes and the famous dance forms include ghoomer and kalbelia. Mehndi too plays an important role at times of celebration. Kite flying tradition of the city seems to be undying too. The language of Jaipurwalas is a very soft spoken language and can win hearts of other people. Learning the language and engaging in dialogues with local people is one way to have fun.

    5.   Puppet Shows: Jaipur’s most popular form of folk entertainment and traditional occupation is the Puppet Shows. The art of puppetry is practiced by a community of agricultural laborers of Rajasthan, known as the Bhats. No village fair, no religious festival and no social gathering in Jaipur can be complete without these shows. The puppets are also known as kathputlis, where kath is wood and putli is doll. These puppets are readily available in markets of Jaipur and form a wonderful gift. The puppeteers use the strings to move the puppets around the stage. A lot of interesting short stories are narrated through these puppets, making it a thorough learning experience. The pair of Moomal-Mahendra, Dhola-Maru and other legendary pairs are still popular with the general and local folk in Jaipur. Such shows can be seen at Nahargarh Fort, Hawa Mahal, and many more places in Jaipur.

       6.   Bike Racing: I know what you are thinking!! Jaipur and Bikes? How’s that even possible… but then Jaipur is a blend of both the worlds. As much as its cultural roots are strong, it has embraced the modern source of entertainment too. There are various clubs and organizations taking this forward. SAAHAS (Society for Adventure Awareness Humanity & Automobile Sports) is dedicated to promote motor sports and is on the way to develop Jaipur, Rajasthan as the most popular International destination for Motor Racing by regularly organizing variety of Motor Sport Events which provide a platform to Amateur Motor Racing Enthusiasts. SAAHAS also offers proper guidance to the youngsters who are passionate for Adventure on Wheels. This organization is registered under Rajasthan Society Registration Act, 1958 & is affiliated member of The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India.

      7.   The Safaris: Completely drenched in extravagance, the city offers camel, horse, and elephant
safaris. Camel Safari is arranged by Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC). Camel rides in Jaipur city attract large number of tourist every year. In ancient times, the elephant was used as a Royal Vehicle for the Kings. One can enjoy the heritage trip of the Pink City on these elephants and get a feel of royalty, especially while visiting Amber Fort. During Holi festival, an elephant festival is also held every year in Jaipur. A game of Polo is the main highlight of the program. The horses were earlier used by the Rajputs and Royal families of Rajasthan in battle fields and for hunting. Nowadays, one can enjoy horse riding during Jaipur Tour. For security reasons, tamed camels, elephants, and horses are used for the ride. These safaris will add to your memories of the city and give it a tinge of adventure.

The markets in Jaipur are full of hand-looms and trinkets. The multi-hued dresses add to the color and vividness of the markets. The bangles are a sure shot buy. Indian Youth more suicide prone?

By Ila Garg

Suicides have lately become a great cause of worry. More and more children are seeing suicide as an easy escape route for their problems. Of late, the suicide rates have been on an alarming rise, especially among Indian youth.

According to a study conducted by WHO, every year about 8,00,000 people commit suicide worldwide. Among these 17% are Indian residents, mostly falling in the 15-29 age group. The reasons for these can be variable. However, the one thing that can be clearly observed is that the Indian youth is under pressure and the high expectations, peer pressure, falling grades, lack of job opportunities, workplace harassment, etc. can be the driving force towards the path of ending their lives.

suicide
Akash Shukla, a print journalist from Lucknow says, “One must have the right to end something that they don’t like. They should have the right to reject life. Suicide is, in a way, liberation – a liberty from a screwed-up life that you never wanted but became yours, inadvertently. We all have a sense of responsibility towards ourselves. No matter how close someone is to you, no one can understand the deepest pain that a heart hides, except the self. That’s why a man is responsible for any choice he takes – either life or death.
The youth thus, fails to understand that suicide doesn’t end the pain, but simply passes it on to those you love. They are so blinded by their sorrow that they see suicide as the means to end it; not giving it a second thought.

“Suicide should be the end of extreme problems, but not every problem,” says an ardent blogger, Shwetabh Mathur.

If reports are to be believed, Indian youth residing abroad are most prone to committing suicides. A recent data reveals that majority of suicides in Fiji are among the children of Indian descent. The statistics are nearly same for Indians in Malaysia too, as quoted by the Asia-Pacific Psychiatry journal Indians account for about 40% suicide deaths in Malaysia.

Poisoning and hanging from the ceiling have emerged as the most used methods to commit suicide.
With the number of suicide cases increasing, the Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy has expressed his concern, “There needs to be an investigation… Everyone here is important – the parents, the school.”  In addition, he suggested that passing a law to cut down on volatile substances that may lead to death might help in bringing the suicide rate down among children.
Earlier, in 2003, the draft of Volatile Substance Abuse Decree could not proceed due to constitutional requirements. This draft, spearheaded by the national substance abuse advisory council, stated that the wholesalers and retailers who are found selling the banned products can be punished. Reddy believes that legalising this decree might help to some extent but still the question that remains is why the children are driven to commit suicide!

Social isolation has been found as one of the major reasons for committing suicides. A feeling of being the odd one out or not wanted in the peer group has also compelled some to become self-centered and a victim of depression. A prolonged case of depression then leads to suicide attempt.

“Suicide isn’t something natural. Unless one has conjured up a philosophical reason to die, the person is usually depressed, psychotic, severely impulsive, or is simply crying out for help and doesn’t really want to die. So, it’s almost always an avoidable step,” says Roshni Chakrabarty, who hails from Kolkata.

“We need to be more aware of the people around us in order to notice any behavioral changes and also give them the chance to reach out for the help they need,” she added.

Pahala- a village flourishing with Rasgulla Business

By Ila Garg and Arnab Mitra

R1

An inescapable fragrance of sweets imbues the streets of Pahala, a place between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. Innumerable sweet shops, on either side of the road, are definitely an amazing sight to savour on.

Kelu Charan Mohanty, the man behind the fame of Pahala told NewsGram, “It was way back in 1965 when I came here and opened my first sweet shop. Initially, we sold sweets at a price of Re 1 per piece.”
When asked from where had he learnt the art of making Rasgulla, he said, “I joined the famous KC Das sweet shop in the year 1945, and worked there for 20 years. But soon the monotonous routine started to bore me; it was then that I decided to make Rasgullas on my own at my native place.”
In 60’s Pahala had no facilities, nothing at all. Illiteracy and malnutrition were widespread. The lack of electricity added to the plight. The only source of income for the people was mushroom farming.

R3

Mohanty’s initiative inspired the natives and from the initial one shop, Pahala gradually made way for almost hundred and fifty shops. Once a village stricken in poverty, Pahala is now filled with well to do families. The natives now own good homes and their children are well educated too. But the most interesting fact is that the family members are still devoted to the Rasgulla business and even the raw materials that they use are all home-made.

R4

About a hundred and fifty shops are spread in a stretch of 2 kms on the national highway, where the artisans work hard every day to make delicious Rasgullas. The Rasgullas are priced at a very reasonable rate that ranges between Rs. 3 to Rs. 6 per piece.

The economy of Pahala villages is thus, based on the Rasgulla business, and according to Harihar Behra, “The profit per day varies between Rs. 1000 to Rs. 2000, and during the festive seasons it reaches to Rs. 3000.” Regardless of all the expense made on the shop maintenance and other amenities, the owner is able to save around Rs. 1000 per day easily.

R6

The sweets are made using some extraordinary techniques. At first, cheena is processed for around five hours in a wooden stove to make it thin. Then tiny cheena balls are made, which are then processed for two hours in slightly saccharine water. They ensure that the end product is ready by 4 PM to be sold in the shops. The shops remain open till 9 PM. Besides Rasgulla, they also make different kinds of sweets like cheena bada, ledikeni, swarvaja and other delicious sweets.

They also supply Rasgullas to the other shops of Orissa. In addition, they get orders for different occasions, like marriage ceremony and birthday party. The quality and taste of their Rasgullas get appreciated across the nation. They are now trying to conquer the markets of Kolkata too. Their sweets are also sent to Sussex, England and other parts of the world.

R3

Pahala narrates the story of about hundred and fifty odd artists who work hard every day and yet these people are neglected by the government. Even the condition of roads is pathetic here and it often hampers their daily business. But, the artists never compromise with their creation. It can be seen as the infamous village came to limelight due to the struggle and dedication of the people of Pahala.

Happy Stretching!! Happy Yoga Day!! :)

So, one thing that is trending everywhere and gripping the attention across the country is the International Yoga Day. Finally, after eons, we have a thing that has united us in all our spirits. Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. Today, it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as International Yoga Day by resolution 69/131. International Yoga Day aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

'International Yoga Day' is one of the best things that has happened to humanity in recent times. It has given us a 'food for thought'. No real transformation can happen in one day but a day is enough to bring awareness about the ancient technology that had long been forgotten. Yoga is much more than a system of exercises. It’s a recipe for peace. It is a path to transformation of the self, something that has the solution to all the problems. It is after all an ancient secret of beauty, both internal and external. Yoga is an inspiration, a self-realization. It de-stresses you and holds the key to the ultimate happiness.

With few cities already having events like 'Rahgiri', which was introduced as a new kind of experience. City dwellers can reach here and indulge in all sorts of recreational activities to keep themselves healthy and happy. Rahgiri has special activities for kids too. Activities such as scatting, cycling, gully cricket, painting, rangoli, volleyball, lemon race, tug of war, aerobics, guitar playing, other musical programs and cultural programs are organised in this event. In Delhi, Rahgiri is organised every Sunday at CP (inner circle) during early morning hours (starting as early as 6:30AM).

International Yoga Day has managed to rekindle the interest of the masses towards a healthy lifestyle and has given an encouragement to bring back the zeal that was lost in the race of life. It has also ensured that people finally step out and embrace nature and see what they usually let go unnoticed. Often, we pass through beautiful gardens while on way to our work place but we can't find time to step out and breathe with open arms, International Yoga Day has finally given us an avenue to unleash our desires. It's almost like serving the old wine in a new bottle.

Happy Stretching!! Happy Yoga Day!! :)

Sanskrit: Why are we failing to keep the lamp burning?

Sanskrit is one language that our ancestors have left us with but so far what have we done with it? Nothing! We have degraded the language and still continue to neglect it most of the time.

All our ancient scriptures are written in the pious language of Sanskrit. At one point of time, it was considered the language of Brahmins, a language to be respected. It was a privilege to learn and converse in the language. Even speculations were raised to make it India’s national language but they were soon dismissed.

Plight is such that today, the youngsters run away from the language and are happily adapting to the English language as it appears trendier in comparison. Sanskrit has been marginalized as a result and English is soon replacing its earlier status. The lamp lit in reverence of Sanskrit language is now flickering by the strong tides and winds of Western culture.

One of the major reason for the degrading status of Sanskrit language can be the rejection of Indian culture by the teenagers. They are no longer inclined towards their own culture as the fascination of West has taken over their mindsets.

Today, a degree in Sanskrit language holds no importance. The teachers teaching the language don’t have the same status as the ones who teach English. As soon as the students are given the choice between Sanskrit, Hindi, and sometimes even French, they either choose Hindi or French, but Sanskrit is always a big ‘no’. So where are we going wrong?

The country and the citizens are going through a major change and though this change is not that bad, but the roots should not be let lose else in no time, the tree dies out. This simple logic is often ignored by the natives. The keepers of the language that is, the Brahmins and the priests are themselves becoming a part of the corrupted society. This has made the common men directionless and unable to decide what’s best for them. Knowing English language is a good thing, in fact, in today’s world it is necessary to know it since it is the official language, but breaking ties with the cultural language is not the right thing. However, with globalization seeping in, it’s hard to keep the cultural ties intact.

I believe, people are blinded by the charm of the English language and the Western culture that is leaving them with no time to reconnect with their oldest language. The language is undeniably losing its relevance and nobody cares.

Though there seems to be no hope left for the rekindling of the love and respect for the Sanskrit language, yet in my opinion, if we continue to bring in more experimental ways to highlight the essential and interesting aspects of the language, we can retrieve back. Denizens of India need to revisit history and understand that what they are moving away from is not just a language, but a cultural history in itself.
