The Untold Tales: Love and Other Demons - Book Review

The Untold Tales: Love and Other Demons
By Paras
Review By Ila Garg

‘The Untold Tales: Love and Other Demons’ by Paras is an anthology of 13 short stories. Each story covers a different aspect—the highs and lows of relations are explicitly described. From the struggles in the life of a prostitute to the dynamics of a mother-son relationship, all are given space in the book.

Through these stories, the readers will feel how impactful choices and decisions are in deciding the course of one’s life. The humdrum of day-to-day life got a twist and reflection in these 13 tales.

The blurb reads as, "It is a short story book that has characters from all walks of life, many of them, we may even have come across. A boy who is an amputee, highs and lows of friendship, a guy who leaves home and join eunuchs, a home-maker suffering from domestic violence, travel restrictions during Covid-19, life and struggle of someone in prostitution, an insane doctor, mother-son relationship and so on. The pandemic (Covid-19) has taken numerous lives but have you ever heard of giving a life to someone? Love is blind, but what’s the maximum extent, is it Prostitution? Do you want to be a Doctor, Scientist, Businessman but do you want to be a member of the eunuch homes? “Hope” is the only intangible asset that never lets you down. Old age parental care is tough but it leads to murder, find out how? Kindness always pays in the long run, but Beware it can be hazardous sometimes. ‘Rape’ is the only word that horrifies, but what if the protagonist was a child? Love bites are never the omen of love. Are you keen to read more about these dynamics? Find out for yourself!"

The language is kept quite simple, making it an easy read for even readers who aren’t so well-versed with the English language. The tone is light, however, overall it’s an emotional rollercoaster experience. The best and worst sides of mankind are exposed in each of the tales with some hard-hitting lessons.

The traumatic experiences of child abuse, the struggles of an amputee, the life of eunuchs, and the events in the life of an insane doctor come to forth through Paras’s words. Some social issues like domestic violence, rape and prostitution are also included in the book.

As an English editor, it was difficult for me to get through the book as there were innumerable grammatical and spelling errors. This marred the entire experience of book reading for me and I couldn’t help but cringe at every word—so much so that I wanted to stop and tell the author to go for a reprint with proper edits.
