The Amigos - Book Review

The Amigos
By Tanmay Dubey and Rahul Tiwari
Review By Ila Garg

The Amigos, a novel by Tanmay Dubey and Rahul Tiwari, is published by Rupa Publication. The cover looks quite vibrant with yellow and orange hues. The three cycle riders are obviously the three friends that this story would be about. Doesn’t this remind you of the fun that you have with your friends?

Tanmay Dubey is an IT professional based in Gurugram for over 15 years. After his hugely successful first book, Just Six Evenings, by Rupa Publications, The Amigos is his second book. When not busy spinning a yarn, Tanmay can be found reviewing Bollywood films on his popular Facebook page ‘Tanmay’s Movie Adda’. He loves running marathons in different parts of the world and is also passionate about long-distance cycling. He can be reached at authortanmay@gmail.com or on Twitter @Tanmay_Dubey.

Rahul Tiwari is an Electronics Engineer and after working in IT companies like Wipro and IBM for 6 years, he quit his job to follow his dreams. The Amigos is a part of his dream. He currently lives in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh and spends his time as a farmer and an entrepreneur. He is a gamer by choice and loves travelling. He can be reached at tiwari.rahultiwari@gmail.com.

The blurb reads as, “Three friends from college—Rahul, Ritesh and Rehan—are living their respective mundane lives. Until one day when an incident makes them come back together after six years. They relive their old memories of when they had joined the college. Their strong bond had helped them deal with college pressures, make new friends, discover love and handle the toughest situations, all the while having the best time of their lives. Ritesh had always sworn by his mantra of GMD that helped him in college when he and his friends had to face difficult professors or bullying seniors and even later on, while choosing his career path and negotiating every challenge that fell in his way. But what is GMD? Who has it in them? And how can one use it to realize one’s potential? Will one incident change the course of life of these three friends? A story of friendship, bonding, revolution and growing-up, The Amigos will resonate with everyone who has experienced strong bonds and long-lasting friendships in college and beyond.”

The Amigos is a story about three college friends—Rahul, Ritesh and Rehan. They are living their mundane life and then the turn comes! When the three friends meet after a gap of six years, it’s all about reliving the fun days again, and coming out of the monotony. Their bond of friendship then becomes the highlight of the novel.

Earlier, they dealt with college pressures together and made some new friends too. They handled tough situations together like we all do and fell in love during those days. So when the three come together again, it is like living it all over again, like going back to experience those bitter-sweet memories again!

The lucidity of the story is commendable. Tanmay Dubey and Rahul Tiwari have indeed managed to create a good college tale. The language is kept simple and easy to comprehend for the readers. The only thing that could have been better is maybe the authors could have added avoided the detailed descriptions at some places which was kind of redundant, and not used ** for abuses. I mean, we all know the words, right?

And authors should understand that how we speak is not how we write when it comes to a novel. The language in a novel should be refined and therefore, slangs and abuses should be avoided unless and until they are the need of the plot!

How the three friends reunited, what were their struggles and professional aspirations, were they successful in their careers, how the authors manage to touch upon subjects of parent-child relationship, young adult minds, patriotism, social issues, etc. through these three friends are some of the many reasons why you will keep turning the pages to find out what happens in The Amigos.
It’s a light read, especially during travel it can be a good companion. I wish both the authors all the best for their future endeavours.
